The focus of this research is to investigate different PA topologies to provide wideband power efficient solutions that exceed the state-of-the-art performance. This goal will be pursued in two different approaches. On the one hand, Doherty PAs have outstanding efficiency performances but are extremely challenging to design for wide bandwidths and optimize at mmWave. On the other hand, broadband Bi-Directional Amplifiers (BDA) will be investigated to integrate various functions, provide single chip solutions and reduce the switching losses, which effectively translates into better power efficiency and reduced system complexity. Circuits in both silicon and III-V will be investigated to provide the right solution that meets high power and dense system integration requirements of mmWave phased arrays.
