When Capacitors Fly: Towards High Power Density DC-DC Conversion on Chip

Lectured by Robbe Stassart

What

This seminar introduces DC-DC conversion from the basics, showing how switches and capacitors can work together to turn a high voltage into a low-voltage. We will shortly discuss the fundamental working of switched capacitor DC-DC converters and the relevant loss mechanisms. Next, we will go over the design of a fully integrated 90V to 5V converter chip for battery management applications as an example. We’ll explore what makes integration attractive, as well as the design challenges associated with high input voltages and power densities. Finally, we will look ahead to the opportunities that arise when moving towards lower input voltages.
