Design, Driving, and Compensation for High-Resolution Active Matrix Displays

What

The strive for better visual experiences drives display industry and research to continuous improvement. Therefore, this work focuses on going towards high-resolution, uniform AMOLED displays with a high brightness range. For achieving high resolution, it is important to keep the pixel size, and thus the pixel circuit minimal. Therefore, a minimal 2T1C pixel circuit is used throughout this work. This minimal pixel circuit allows resolutions up to 1129 ppi, which can be even further increased to 1752 ppi by the proposed technology optimizations. Moreover, the proposed external compensation method shows improvements in uniformity by up to a factor ~50. Further, a global dimming method is implemented, compatible with the proposed 2T1C pixel circuit, enabling a wide range of global brightness settings, while maintaining image quality in various light conditions.
