The immense increase in compute power required for future AI datacenter relies on significantly faster communication links. A possible solution lies in using the large available bandwidths in the mm-wave spectrum, but moving to these frequencies requires a fundamental change in how we design circuits. In this seminar, we will explore the unique challenges of mm-wave design that differ from its lower frequency analog counterpart. We will look at how these principles are applied in practice through the design of a power amplifier (PA) and voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) in a 7 nm FinFET technology. Finally, we will expand the scope from the chip to the channel, investigating how Polymer Microwave Fibers (PMF) are designed to serve as a high-speed waveguide for the next generation of communication links.
